SOS Médecins National Newsletter, September 28, 2020
Summary
In week 39 (September 21–27, 2020), total activity at SOS Médecins clinics declined among children and those aged 15–44 (down 12%, or 8,312 visits) and remained stable among those aged 75 and older. Medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups decreased by 27% in Week 39. This marks the second consecutive week of decline among children and the first among adults. In total, 5,070 procedures were recorded in Week 39 (vs. 6,967 procedures in Week 38, a decrease of 1,897 procedures). The share of total activity across all age groups has fallen to 7.8% (vs. 9.5% in week 38). This decline is observed in almost all regions except Brittany (+159%, or +186 procedures), Declines range from -46% to -39% for the regions of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire, Grand-Est, and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and from -29% to -20% for the regions of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Centre-Val de Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, and Occitanie. Since the start of surveillance, 103,460 tests for suspected COVID-19 have been performed. Among other conditions, all seasonal and non-specific indicators are stable or declining. However, there are a few rare increases in small sample sizes, such as the rise in cases among those aged 15–44 for isolated fever (+8%, or +28 cases) and among those aged 75 and older for asthma attacks (+54%, or +15 cases) and trauma (+11%, or +47 cases). Among the most common conditions, increases are observed only among adults; these include an increase in digestive disorders and low back pain/sciatica, and more specifically, among those aged 75 and older, cardiac disorders and falls.
