SOS Médecins National Newsletter, September 27, 2011
Over the past week, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics has increased compared to the previous week: up 15% for children and up 9% for adults. This increase, which is more moderate than that observed over the previous two weeks, is due to diagnoses of ENT conditions (particularly nasopharyngitis and tonsillitis) and respiratory conditions (bronchitis, asthma, bronchiolitis, and influenza), which have been on the rise for the past three weeks, particularly among children.
In particular, SOS Médecins activity related to asthma is on the rise among children and adults but appears to be stabilizing in recent days. The increase in calls for respiratory conditions observed among children under 2 years of age continues. It accounts for half of all calls to SOS Médecins nationwide. Diagnoses of bronchiolitis for this age group are also still on the rise. The number of calls for flu-like symptoms has increased and now accounts for more than 30% of all calls; this increase, which particularly affects children, coincides with the rise in calls for respiratory conditions. The number of flu diagnoses has also risen over the past week. The "gastroenteritis" indicator has remained stable over the past week. The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has risen slightly in recent days.
