SOS Médecins National Newsletter, September 20, 2011

Over the past week, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics has increased compared to the previous week, particularly among children: a 45% increase for children under 5 and a 40% increase for children aged 5 to 14. This increase, which is typical every September (back-to-school season), is due to diagnoses of ENT conditions (nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis, laryngitis, tracheitis) and respiratory conditions (bronchitis, asthma, bronchiolitis, flu), which rose sharply compared to the previous week among children.

In particular, SOS Médecins activity related to asthma is on the rise among children and adults (the number of calls for this diagnosis has nearly doubled compared to the previous week). A sharp increase in calls for respiratory conditions among children under 2 years of age has been observed in recent days. Diagnoses of bronchiolitis for this age group are also on the rise. The number of calls for flu-like symptoms has increased and accounts for 30% of all calls; this increase, which particularly affects children, coincides with the rise in calls for respiratory conditions (54% of calls). The number of flu diagnoses has also risen over the past week. The "gastroenteritis" indicator remains stable. The number of deaths certified by the SOS Médecins associations has remained stable over the past few days.
