SOS Médecins National Newsletter, September 13, 2011
Over the past week, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics has increased compared to the previous week among children: up 36% for children under 5 and up 15% for children aged 5 to 14. This increase, which is typical every September (back-to-school season), is due to diagnoses of ENT conditions (nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis, laryngitis, tracheitis) and respiratory conditions (bronchitis, asthma, bronchiolitis), which rose sharply compared to the previous week among children.
SOS Médecins activity related to asthma is on the rise among children and stable among adults. A sharp increase in calls for respiratory conditions among children under 2 years of age has been observed in recent days; this indicator accounts for more than 35% of call reasons. Diagnoses of bronchiolitis for this age group are also on the rise. The number of flu diagnoses has remained stable over the past week (0.25% of diagnoses). The reasons for calls regarding flu-like symptoms have increased and account for 25% of call reasons; this increase, which affects children, coincides with the rise in calls for respiratory conditions. The "gastroenteritis" indicator has also risen; calls regarding gastrointestinal symptoms account for approximately 15% of call reasons and are at the same level as last June.
The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has risen slightly in recent days.
