SOS Médecins National Newsletter, September 1–7, 2014
Overall Activity TrendsFor the second consecutive week, activity at SOS Médecins clinics has risen slightly among children under 5 years old (+19%, or 954 more visits) and those aged 5 to 14 (+16%, or 629 more visits), but has remained stable or declined slightly among adults.
Trends in Major Conditions Among children aged 2 to 14, there was an increase of approximately 20% in visits for ENT conditions (including an 80% increase, or 149 more visits, for laryngitis/tracheitis), 28% for gastroenteritis, and 20% for trauma. The most common conditions are stable or declining among children under 5 and adults, with the exception of a 14% increase in nasopharyngitis among children under 15.
Trends in seasonal indicators Visits for asthma are rising sharply among children under 15, with cases nearly doubling over the past week, though the numbers remain moderate (+11 visits among children under 2, +65 visits among 2- to 14-year-olds) and within expected ranges for the period (373 weekly visits). This increase is most noticeable in the Southwest, Île-de-France, West, and Southeast regions. It should be noted that an increase in emergency care visits for asthma has been observed in both sources of morbidity (primary care and hospital emergency departments) every year since data collection began, specifically during the two weeks following the start of the school year. For the second consecutive week, consultations for gastroenteritis and isolated fever have risen by approximately 20% among children under 15, but remain stable or are declining among adults. The numbers are comparable to those of 2012 and 2013 for these two conditions. Consultations for general malaise increased over the past week across all age groups except for children under 2 years of age (+47%, or +63 visits among adults under 75), though the numbers remain within the expected range for the season.Visits for summer-related conditions (allergies, insect bites, and heat-related illnesses) remained stable over the past week, within expected seasonal ranges.
