SOS Médecins National Newsletter, October 9, 2023
Key Points
In week 40 (October 2–8, 2023), activity at SOS Médecins clinics remained stable across all age groups. Seasonal respiratory indicators showed a moderate increase, primarily among adults. After several weeks of increases, medical procedures for bronchitis and ENT conditions remained slightly higher among those aged 15 and older (up 15% and 5%, respectively, or 300 and 696 procedures). Also noteworthy is the continued increase in procedures for pneumonia among those aged 15–74 (+23%, or +85 procedures) and children under 15 (+29%, or +69 procedures), as well as procedures for bronchiolitis among children under 2 (+18%, or +51 procedures). In contrast, procedures for asthma declined in the first week following several weeks of increases and stabilization in week 39.
Among other indicators, a slight increase was observed in children for isolated fever (+9%, or +55 cases) and conjunctivitis (+17%, or +82 cases), as well as for vomiting among 2- to 14-year-olds (+20%, or +41 cases) and diarrhea among children under 2 years of age (+30%, or +30 cases). Among adults, visits for anxiety were on the rise among those aged 15–44 and those aged 65 and older (up 11% and 26%, respectively, or 75 and 35 visits).
In the context of the Rugby World Cup, which began on September 8, no unusual variations in the monitored indicators were observed. It should be noted, however, that among small patient cohorts, there was a slight increase in cases of respiratory failure, against a backdrop of rising respiratory conditions (+28%, or +15 cases across all ages), and foodborne illness, with 14 cases in S40 versus 2 in S39.
