SOS Médecins National Newsletter, November 2, 2010

This week marks the start of winter surveillance, which will track the following indicators: gastroenteritis, respiratory illnesses in infants, clinically diagnosed influenza, and deaths.

Over the past week, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics has risen sharply across all age groups and geographic areas. This increase is due to school holidays and the extended All Saints’ Day weekend.

Calls for "bronchiolitis and respiratory illnesses in infants" among children under 2 years of age were more numerous this week compared to the previous week. They account for half of the calls for this age group.

The "gastroenteritis" indicator has been rising steadily for several weeks. It accounts for approximately 15% of call reasons.

There has been an increase in clinical flu diagnoses as well as calls regarding flu-like symptoms over the past few days.

The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has increased compared to the previous week.
