SOS Médecins National Newsletter, November 16, 2020
Summary
In week 46 (November 9–15, 2020), total activity at SOS Médecins clinics increased among children (+17%, or 2,205 more visits) and remained stable among adults. In week 46, following 5 weeks of increases and 1 week of decline, medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 decreased for the second consecutive week. This decline was observed across all age groups but was more pronounced among adults (-30% among those aged 15–74 and -18% among those aged 75 and older) than among children (-8% among those under 15). Suspected COVID-19 is the second most common diagnosis among adults and the third most common among those aged 2–14. In total, 4,571 cases were recorded (vs. 6,275 cases in week 45, a decrease of 27%). The share of total activity across all age groups has also declined to 7.7% (vs. 11% in week 45). This decline, observed in all regions, is most pronounced in Île-de-France (-35.9%, or -411 cases), Centre-Val-de-Loire (-33.5%, or -80 cases), Hauts-de-France (-33.2%, or -200 cases), and Occitanie (-33%, or -89 cases). Since the start of surveillance, 146,111 procedures for suspected COVID-19 have been performed. Among other conditions, seasonal respiratory illnesses remain stable among children and are declining among adults. Of particular note is the decline in cases of bronchiolitis to levels more than twice lower than in previous years. Conversely, in connection with the return to school in S45, cases of asthma attacks are on the rise among 2- to 14-year-olds (+65%, or +109 cases). We also note an increase in procedures for isolated fever (+13%, or +43 procedures) and conjunctivitis (+60%, or +56 procedures) among 2- to 14-year-olds; ENT procedures among those under 15 (+26%, or +1,254 procedures); and general malaise among adults (+13%, or +26 procedures).
