SOS Médecins National Newsletter, May 28, 2018

Summary

In week 21 (May 21–27), total activity at SOS Médecins clinics increased among children under 15 (+18%, or 2,981 visits) and remained stable among adults.

Visits related to seasonal illnesses were mostly on the rise in Week 21, for both adults and children. Notably, across all age groups, there was a sharp increase in visits for insect bites (+79%, or +381 visits), allergies (+36%, or +543 visits), and burns (+34%, or +23 visits). Consultations for hyperthermia/heatstroke and viral meningitis are also on the rise (+207% and +53%, respectively) but involve moderate numbers (fewer than 50 visits).

Among the non-specific indicators, we note a sharp increase in visits for asthma in children (+61%, or +152 visits) as well as an increase in visits for isolated fever in children and adults (+22%, or +224 visits across all ages). For all of these indicators, the associated activity level is comparable to that of the previous two years. After a decline in recent weeks, visits for measles have stabilized at a low level (fewer than 10 visits across all age groups) and are similar to the levels seen in the past two years during this time of year.

Among the most common conditions, the following are observed: in children under 15 years of age, an increase in visits for upper respiratory tract infections (+24%), bronchitis (+30%), viral syndrome (+25%); and among people aged 75 and older, an increase in reported deaths (+13%) and visits for deterioration in general health (+18%) and heart failure (+21%).
