SOS Médecins National Newsletter, March 18, 2014
Trends in Overall Activity: Over the past week, activity at SOS Médecins clinics has continued the seasonal downward trend that began in mid-February, both nationally and regionally. Case numbers are consistent with those observed during the same period in the previous two years.
Trends in Seasonal Indicators A sharp decline in diagnoses of influenza/influenza-like illness was again observed over the past week both nationally and regionally, across all age groups (-41%, -1,126 consultations) and by age group. The numbers are comparable to those of 2013 and lower than those of 2012. Over the previous week, asthma diagnoses increased slightly among children under 5 years of age (+10%), though the numbers remain low (113 weekly consultations). This trend is also observed in the emergency departments of the OSCOUR® network and coincides with the episode of air pollution that affected a large part of mainland France toward the end of the week. Regionally, an increase in the number of asthma-related visits is noted in the Île-de-France/Centre, North, Northeast, and Southwest regions.
All other seasonal indicators (gastroenteritis, bronchitis, ENT infections, isolated fever, and pneumonia) remained stable or declined over the past week, at levels comparable to those of 2012 and 2013. Finally, it is worth noting a slight increase in consultations for trauma (+10%, +122 cases), observed mainly among adults.
