SOS Médecins National Newsletter, June 7, 2011

This week marks the start of the summer bulletin, which tracks the following syndrome-based indicators: fainting spells, fever, allergies, gastroenteritis, insect bites, heatstroke, and deaths. Over the past week, the total volume of activity for SOS Médecins increased across all age groups compared to the previous week and in all geographic areas. This higher demand is due to the long Ascension Day weekend.

The "malaise" indicator remained stable over the past week across all age groups. SOS Médecins activity related to fever increased over the past week among children under 15, as did allergies across all age groups.

The "gastroenteritis" indicator has risen slightly. Asthma cases also increased over the past week and may be the result of osmotic shock caused by the extreme heat and severe thunderstorms that occurred in certain regions. A spike in insect bites was observed last weekend. Other conditions potentially linked to heat (heatstroke, dehydration) show no particular change.

The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins associations remained stable over the past week.
