SOS Médecins National Newsletter, June 19, 2017
Summary
In week 24 of 2017 (June 12–19, 2017), the overall activity of SOS Médecins clinics decreased across all age groups (down 5% and 9% among children and adults, respectively) and was comparable to previous years during the same period.
Regarding seasonal spring and summer conditions, following the high temperatures at the end of week 24, there was a significant increase in visits for heat-related conditions (HRC) across all age groups (+223% and +158% among children and adults, respectively), primarily heatstroke. The largest increase was observed among 2- to 14-year-olds (+230%, with the number of HRI consultations rising from 54 to 178). In week 24, the proportion of HRI cases in SOS Médecins’ overall activity exceeded the figures from the two previous years. To a lesser extent, there was also an increase in cases of burns among children (+70%, corresponding to 14 cases) and people aged 15 to 74 (+59%, corresponding to 47 cases), as well as insect bites among children under 2 years old (+35%) and adults (+14%). For these two types of cases, the proportion of activity is higher than in previous years. Other seasonal conditions are stable or declining across all age groups and at levels comparable to previous years (except for infectious conjunctivitis in adults, which remains slightly higher). However, there is a slight increase in cases of chickenpox among children (+6%)
The vast majority of the most common conditions are either declining or stable across all age groups. The increases observed in week 23 did not persist into week 24. However, there was a slight increase in visits for general malaise (+15%) and various cardiac problems (+12%) among people aged 75 and older.
