SOS Médecins National Newsletter, June 17, 2014

Overall Activity Trends: Over the past week, SOS Médecins activity has risen slightly across all age groups (+10%, or +4,798 visits) both nationally and regionally (with no significant impact on specific regions). This increase is particularly noticeable among children under 5 years of age (+16%, or +1,609 visits) and those aged 5 to 14 (+14%, or +892 visits). The numbers are higher than those observed in 2012 and 2013.

Trends in major conditions: the primary reasons for visits are ENT infections and gastroenteritis, particularly among children.

Trends in seasonal indicators: Consultations for heatstroke and dehydration have risen sharply over the past week, with 211 visits (versus 53 the previous week) for heatstroke and 104 visits (versus 55 the previous week) for dehydration. This increase is observed across all age groups for the heatstroke indicator, although it is more pronounced among young adults; however, it applies only to adults for the dehydration indicator. This rise is observed in all regions, but it is most pronounced in the Southeast, Southwest, and Central-East regions. The numbers observed are significantly higher than those in 2012 and 2013 for both indicators, with a trend similar to the one observed in mid-July 2012. These trends are expected given the rise in temperatures over the past week. After a week of increases, consultations for general malaise have stabilized this week across all age groups. As with other summer ailments, the numbers are higher than those in 2012 and 2013 for the same period, but with values close to those typically observed later in the season. The indicator for insect bites is rising sharply across all age groups (+56%, or +189 visits across all ages) and particularly among young adults (+68%, or +113 visits). The numbers observed are significantly higher than those in 2012 and 2013, at a level close (524 weekly visits) to the peak in August 2012. The number of consultations for asthma is rising among children under 2 years of age and young adults but is stable or declining for other age groups, with numbers lower than those for the same period in 2012.Consultations for allergies are on the rise among children under 2 years of age (+38%, or +33 visits) but are stable or declining for other age groups. The level of activity is very close to that observed in early June 2012.
