SOS Médecins National Newsletter, July 6, 2020
Summary
In Week 27 (June 29–July 5, 2020), total activity at SOS Médecins clinics rose sharply among children for the second consecutive week, linked to the resumption of school (+31%, or +3,243 visits), and rose slightly among adults (+6%, or +2,369 visits).
Over the past week, medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 rose by +41%, with a more pronounced increase among children (+69%, or +162 procedures) and those aged 15–74 (+34%, or +280 procedures). Among children, this trend can be explained by the return to school, which has led to an increase in respiratory symptoms and raised the number of medical procedures for suspected COVID-19.
Their share of total activity across all age groups has risen slightly: 2.7% in Week 27 vs. 2.1% in Week 26.
By region, increases ranged from +118% to +16% across 10 regions (in order: Centre-Val de Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Hauts-de-France, Brittany, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie, Île-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Pays de la Loire, and Grand Est). Ile-de-France (22%) and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (15%) account for the highest number of tests for suspected COVID-19 among those recorded nationally. Since the start of surveillance, 60,613 tests for suspected COVID-19 have been performed.
Among other indicators, we observe:
among children, in the context of the return to school, a sharp increase in medical procedures for asthma (+131%, or +109 procedures) and ENT conditions (+106%, or +3,102 procedures).
among adults, an increase in most seasonal and non-specific indicators, notably ENT conditions (+46%, or +1,254 procedures), gastrointestinal symptoms (+10%) and gastroenteritis (+8%), procedures for anxiety (+6%), and for low back pain/sciatica (+5%).
