SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 8, 2013

After an increase during the first week of the school break, activity at SOS Médecins has declined slightly over the past week nationwide; this trend is more pronounced among children under 15 (-24%) during this school break. Overall activity at the organizations is at a level very slightly higher than in 2012 for the same period. Flu diagnoses have declined slightly over the period, with numbers comparable to the 2010–2011 flu season. This decrease is also more pronounced among children (-40% among those under 5 and -30% among those under 15). Unlike other regions, influenza-related activity continues to rise in the Southwest region. Among children under 2 years of age, bronchiolitis diagnoses are down (-19%), with numbers comparable to 2011-2012. Gastroenteritis activity is at a significantly higher level than in the two previous winter seasons; two activity peaks are noted, occurring immediately after the two New Year’s Eve celebrations during week 52 of 2012 and week 1 of 2013. Apart from these two events, activity related to this indicator is stable; however, a slight increase is observed among those under 15 years of age (+11%). Activity related to measles remains stable at a low level. The mortality indicator is stable and comparable to 2011–2012 and 2010–2011 for the same period. The main conditions observed across all age groups are gastroenteritis, ENT conditions, and respiratory conditions (influenza and bronchitis). ENT conditions also decreased over the period: otitis (-32%), nasopharyngitis (-27%), and laryngitis (-25%). Note that there was an increase in chickenpox (+16%); data not shown.
