SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 15, 2024
Key Points
In Week 2 (January 8–14, 2024), the first week back after the end-of-year holidays, activity at SOS Médecins clinics declined among adults (-8%, or 6,320 fewer visits) and children under 2 years of age (-7%, or 638 fewer visits), while it rose slightly among children aged 2–14 (+5%, or 1,147 more visits).
Seasonal respiratory indicators were mostly down across all age groups. Among children, after two weeks of decline, visits for influenza/flu-like illness were on the rise again (+60%, or +1,027 visits), while they remained stable among adults. Procedures for pneumonia, which were down across all age groups, remained at a level well above previous years, particularly among children.
Among other indicators, notable among children were increases in visits for gastroenteritis and vomiting in similar proportions (+43%, or +886 and +125 visits, respectively) and, specifically among 2- to 14-year-olds, an increase in visits for acute abdominal pain (+58%), viral syndrome (+43%), isolated fever (+13%), and trauma (+91%, or 202 cases—also on the rise among adults but to a lesser extent: +15%, or 272 cases). Finally, among adults aged 15–64, an increase in cases of depression (+22%, or 38 cases) was also observed.
