SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 12–18, 2015
Trends in Overall Healthcare UtilizationOverall activity at SOS Médecins clinics is on the rise among children under 15, particularly those aged 2 to 14. Among adults, activity remains relatively stable. With 67,345 weekly visits, activity is slightly higher than in previous years during this time of year.
Trends in Major Conditions: Visits for the flu are rising sharply, along with an increase in ENT-related conditions among children under 15. Visits for gastroenteritis are stable in this age group, and the number of visits for bronchiolitis is decreasing among children under 2 years of age. Among adults over 15 years of age, visits for influenza/influenza-like illnesses are on the rise, particularly among those aged 15–74, while trends for other major conditions are stable or even declining.
Trends in Seasonal Indicators: The increase in visits for influenza/influenza-like illness continues among children under 15 years of age (approximately +100%, or +992 visits). The numbers are very close to those of the 2012–13 season and are significantly higher than those of the 2013–14 season during the same period. The trend is the same across all regions as the upward phase begins, with a more pronounced and earlier increase in the Île-de-France region.Visits for gastroenteritis are stable among children under 15 and declining among adults over 15 (-14%, or -595 visits), with figures close to those of the 2012-13 season. The temporal trend across regions suggests a possible peak has passed in all regions.Calls to SOS Médecins for other seasonal indicators (nasopharyngitis, otitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, laryngitis/tracheitis, viral syndrome, and isolated fever) are rising sharply among children aged 2 to 14 and, to a lesser extent, among those under 2 for nasopharyngitis and laryngitis/tracheitis. Among adults over 15 years of age, these indicators are down this week. The figures are similar to previous years, except for bronchitis, for which case numbers remain higher than in the previous two years.
