SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 11, 2011

During the first week of 2011, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics declined by 4%, particularly among adults aged 15 to 74. Among children aged 2 to 14, clinic activity rose slightly over the past week.

Over the past week, clinical influenza diagnoses increased by 25% compared to the previous week, particularly among children under 15 years of age (+47%). Among people aged 65 and older, these diagnoses have decreased by 28%. In the Centre/Ile-de-France and North regions, influenza diagnoses reported by the associations appear to be showing a slight decline, while the indicator continues to rise in other geographic regions.

Conversely, the number of calls for flu-like symptoms has decreased slightly (-6%), particularly among people aged 65 and older (-33%). These cases account for half of the activity of SOS Médecins associations.

Among children under 2 years of age, calls for "bronchiolitis and respiratory conditions in infants" have been decreasing since the end of 2010. In recent days, these calls have accounted for 35% of SOS Médecins’ activity for this age group, whereas they accounted for approximately 50% of activity at the peak of the epidemic. These trends are similar to those observed in emergency departments.

Over the past week, the increase in the "gastroenteritis" indicator has been less pronounced than in previous weeks, with a 12% rise. This increase applies only to children under 15 years of age (+41.3%). However, activity related to this condition has stabilized in recent days.

The number of deaths certified by SOS Médecins has decreased over the past week.
