SOS Médecins National Newsletter, February 27, 2023

Key Points

In Week 08 (February 20–26, 2023), the third week of school vacation (Zones B and C), there was an uptick in SOS Médecins activity across all age groups except for 2- to 14-year-olds, with adults seeing an increase of 11% (5,985 more visits) and children under 2 years old seeing an increase of +9%, or 5,210 procedures.

This uptick follows the decline in activity observed in S07, linked on the one hand to the school vacation period (zones A and B vs. zone A only in S06) and on the other hand to the labor action on February 14, 2023 (-88% in medical procedures compared to the previous Tuesday), and should therefore be interpreted with caution, as should the trends presented below.

Across all age groups, there was an increase in trauma-related procedures (+23%, or +454 procedures).

Among adults, the observed increases concern:

  • respiratory conditions: suspected COVID-19 (+23%, or +122 cases), pneumonia (+5%, or +29 cases), and bronchitis among those aged 75 and older (+14%, or +53 cases);

  • mental health indicators: anxiety (+34%, or +263 cases) and depressive states among those aged 15–44 (+31%, or +37 cases);

  • and among other indicators: conjunctivitis (+19% or +100 cases), isolated fever (+15% or +36 cases), urinary tract infections in those aged 15–74 (+18% or +234 cases), and cardiac conditions in those aged 75 and older (heart failure +16% and other cardiac conditions +37%).

Finally, among children, there was an increase in procedures for allergies (+20%, or +70 procedures) and for isolated fever in children under 2 years of age (+15%, or +26 procedures).
