SOS Médecins National Newsletter, February 16–22, 2015

Trends in Overall Healthcare UtilizationDuring the week of February 16–22, overall activity at SOS Médecins clinics declined among children under 15 years of age (down 19%, or 4,704 fewer consultations) and fell slightly among adults over 15 years of age (down 6%, or 2,921 fewer consultations). Activity remains steady and slightly higher than in previous years during this time of year.

Trends in Major ConditionsNotably this week, there was a sharp decline in major conditions across all age groups, particularly regarding influenza/flu-like illness.Among children under 15, winter illnesses such as nasopharyngitis (-15%, -480 visits) and otitis (-13%, -383 visits) are also on the decline.Among adults over 15, activity related to these conditions is stable; only urinary tract infections (+15%, +167 visits) and sciatic pain (+18%, 190 visits) are on the rise. For the fourth consecutive week, influenza/flu-like illness is the leading diagnosis among 2- to 14-year-olds and among 15- to 74-year-olds. Visits are down 38% among children aged 2 to 14 and 20% among adults aged 15 to 74.

Trends in seasonal indicators: Consultations for influenza/influenza-like illness show a marked decrease in numbers across all age groups (-25%, -3,515 visits). However, the number of cases remains significantly higher than in the two previous flu seasons. At the regional level, the decline in flu-related activity is observed in all regions but remains high (flu-related activity accounting for 10% or more of coded visits) in most of them. Only the Lorraine region has seen its influenza-related activity fall below 10%. Consultations for pneumonia are stable among adults over 75 and declining among children aged 2–14 (-19%, or -20 visits). They remain significantly higher than those observed during the previous two years. Consultations for bronchitis (-13%, -574 visits) and for isolated fever (-14%, -125 visits) are down across all age groups. Visits for gastroenteritis are stable across all age groups, with numbers within the expected range for the season. Regional trends show stability in nearly all regions.
