SOS Médecins National Newsletter, December 29, 2014 – January 4, 2015

Overall Activity Trends: The number of calls to SOS Médecins clinics has decreased compared to the previous week, by approximately 15% across all age groups and by more than 30% among children under 15. This decline is primarily due to a strike by SOS Médecins clinics on December 29 and 30, 2014. This week’s data should therefore be interpreted with caution.

Trends in Major Conditions: Among children under 2 years of age, visits primarily concern ENT issues, bronchiolitis, and gastroenteritis. Among children aged 2 to 14, the main conditions seen involve ENT issues and gastroenteritis. A sharp increase in chickenpox can be noted in this age group, consistent with Sentinelles data. Among adults, aside from ENT conditions, the main conditions encountered are gastroenteritis, bronchitis, and influenza/flu-like illness. Among people aged 75 and older, the most frequent diagnoses are bronchitis, pneumonia, and gastroenteritis. Note a significant increase in nasopharyngitis in this age group.

Trends in seasonal indicators: Among children under 2 years of age, the proportion of cases involving bronchiolitis has decreased by 14% compared to the previous week. The peak in visits appears to have passed in all regions. The increase in visits for influenza/influenza-like illness continues, particularly among adults (+20% in the proportion of activity across all age groups), especially in the Île-de-France region and the North. Nationally, the trend is at an intermediate level between the last two seasons. Visits for isolated fever, bronchitis, and pneumonia are on the rise among those over 75, despite an overall decrease in activity due to the strike. Visits for gastroenteritis are stable across all age groups. Visits for asthma are stable across all age groups.
