SOS Médecins National Newsletter, August 8, 2017

Summary

  • In week 31 of 2017 (July 31–August 6), the overall activity of SOS Médecins clinics continued to decline among children under 15 (-5.3%), remained stable among those aged 15–74, and increased among adults aged 75 and older (+8%), as is typically observed during this summer vacation period.

  • Among seasonal summer conditions, heat-related visits, including those for burns and insect bites, are on the rise across all age groups, but remain at levels seen in previous years during the same period. There is also an increase in visits among children aged 2–14 for general malaise (though with small sample sizes), for asthma (+20%), as well as for meningitis, even though the peak appeared to have passed in week 27 (+6 cases). Among adults aged 15–74, an increase in visits for asthma (+8%) and for infectious conjunctivitis for the second consecutive week (+8%) is observed.

  • Most of the most common conditions are declining among children, with the exception of an increase in visits for diarrhea among children under 2 years of age (+16.5%), as well as for trauma among 2- to 14-year-olds (+18%). These indicators are within the levels and trends typically observed during this period. Among adults aged 15–74, a 10% increase in visits for dental problems was observed. The most common conditions among adults aged 75 and older are mostly on the rise, particularly visits for deterioration in general health (+29%), urinary tract infections (+14%), falls (+25%), and anxiety (+17.6%).
