SOS Médecins National Newsletter, August 23, 2011

Over the past week, the total volume of activity at SOS Médecins clinics remained stable compared to the previous week (+2.4%). However, it increased slightly among children aged 5 to 14 (+8%), particularly for diagnoses of ear infections (+30% compared to the previous week). The number of cases involving heat-related conditions (heatstroke, dehydration, fainting) has increased over the past three days. Heatstroke cases were observed across all age groups, with half occurring in the Aquitaine region (46 of the 99 cases diagnosed in France over the past four days). Dehydration primarily affected people over the age of 75 and was mainly observed in Aquitaine and Rhône-Alpes. These findings are consistent with the extreme heat observed over the past few days, during which several departments were placed at the "Warning and Action" (Miga) level of the national heatwave plan, corresponding to level 2 out of 3 on the heatwave alert scale.SOS Médecins activity related to diagnoses of fever, allergies, and general malaise has remained stable over the past week. The number of cases involving insect bites is lower than last week and remains within the range observed since the start of summer. No changes were noted in indicators for gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and abdominal pain over the past week.Deaths certified by SOS Médecins associations have decreased in recent days.
