Key Points
In Week 41 (October 9–15, 2023), emergency department activity increased slightly among children (+5%, or 4,793 visits, and +5%, or 443 hospitalizations) and remained stable among adults.
Regarding seasonal respiratory indicators: there was an increase across all age groups in ENT conditions (+10%, or 1,480 visits) and acute bronchitis (+11%, or 174 visits). Among children under 2 years of age, visits for bronchiolitis continue to rise (+18%, or +292 visits), though at a lower level than in previous years, and are accompanied by an increase in visits for cough (+18%, or +67 visits). After a decline observed over the past two weeks, there has been an increase in visits for asthma among those under 15 years of age (+9%, or +298 visits). Notable increases in visits for pneumonia were observed among those under 15 years of age (+34%, or +330 visits) and those aged 75 and older (+12%, or +228 visits), at levels higher than in previous years.
Among other indicators, there was an increase across all age groups in visits for acute gastroenteritis (+11%, or 399 visits), for vomiting among children under 2 years of age (+17%, or 76 visits), for malaise (+13%, or 101 visits) and conjunctivitis (+23%, or 77 visits) among those under 15, and for isolated fever among 2- to 14-year-olds (+13%, or 197 visits).
Regarding mental health, in small sample sizes, there was an increase in visits for stress among adults (+9%, or +48 visits) and for suicidal behavior among children under 15 (+5%, or 8 visits), those aged 15–44 (+11%, or +98 visits), and those aged 75 and older (+7%, or +9 visits). In the context of the Rugby World Cup, which began on September 8, no unusual variations were observed among the monitored indicators.
