Overall Activity Trends: The number of visits and hospitalizations remained stable across all age groups over the past week, with the exception of children under 2 years of age, where a slight increase in visits (+5%, or 911 more visits) and hospitalizations (+9%, or 227 more hospitalizations) was observed, occurring primarily over the weekend (October 18 and 19). The number of visits remains higher than during the same period in 2013.
Trends in Major Conditions: The most common conditions seen in emergency departments remain stable among adults. Among children under 2 years of age, visits for ENT infections are the most frequent (2,555 visits this week) and are the second most common reason for visits among children aged 2–14 (3,321 visits).
Trends in seasonal indicators: Among children under 2 years of age, emergency department visits for bronchiolitis are up 18% (+108 visits). With 708 visits this week, the numbers follow the usual seasonal pattern. Visits for asthma, gastroenteritis, and isolated fever are also on the rise this week for this age group, with increases of 18% (49 more visits) for asthma, 20% (97 more visits) for gastroenteritis, and 11% (117 more visits) for isolated fever, respectively. Case numbers for these conditions remain slightly higher than those of the previous two years during this period. With low case numbers and still within the same age group, visits for acute bronchitis are also on the rise (+35%, or +29 visits). Case numbers are comparable to those of the previous two years. Among other age groups, seasonal indicators remained stable over the past week, and case numbers are comparable to those of the previous two years. With 2,400 weekly visits, case numbers for asthma remain slightly higher than those of the previous two years during this period.Visits for influenza/flu-like illness increased among children (0–15 years) over the past week (+55%, or +31 visits) and remained stable among adults. The number of cases, still low, is comparable to that of the previous two years.
