Key Points

  • In week 45 (November 6–12, 2023), the first week back after school break, emergency room visits and hospitalizations were up among children aged 2–14 (up 25% and 18%, respectively, or 12,083 visits and 754 hospitalizations), down among children under 2, and stable among adults.

  • Among children aged 2–14, in line with the return to school, nearly all monitored indicators are on the rise:

    • respiratory conditions: pneumonia (+26%), influenza (+17%), bronchitis (+17%), asthma (+13%),

    • gastrointestinal conditions: abdominal pain (+35%), gastroenteritis (+17%), vomiting (+8%),

    • other conditions: trauma (+44%), malaise (+23%), neurological symptoms (+25%).

  • Among children under 2 years of age, visits for bronchiolitis are down compared to last week (-11%).

  • Regarding mental health indicators, there has been an increase in suicidal acts among those under 15 (190 in Week 45 versus 87 in Week 44), at levels higher than in previous years, and to a lesser extent among adults, at levels consistent with previous years (+11%).

  • Among those aged 15–74, there was a slight increase in visits for trauma (+7%), neurological symptoms (+9%), and general malaise (+8%). Among those aged 75 and older, nearly all indicators are down, particularly visits for conjunctivitis, asthma, influenza, and bronchitis.
