Key Points

In Week 18 (May 1–7, 2023), emergency department visits increased among children aged 2–14 (+11%, or +5,851 visits) and remained stable in other age groups. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits were stable across all age groups.

Respiratory conditions remained stable or decreased among children and adults aged 15–74, unlike those aged 75 and older, among whom, in small sample sizes, an increase in visits for asthma attacks for the second consecutive week (+13%, or +13 visits), accompanied by a comparable increase in visits for ENT conditions and bronchitis (+16%, or +21 and +38 visits, respectively).

Among other indicators, there was an increase in visits for general malaise among 2- to 14-year-olds—a common occurrence at the start of the school year (+29%, or +114 visits)—and for allergies (+11%, or +53 visits); trauma among 2- to 14-year-olds (+14%) and 15- to 74-year-olds (+7%), and suicide attempts among 45- to 64-year-olds (+21%, or 64 additional visits). Visits for chickenpox continued to rise across all age groups (+26%, or 127 additional visits across all ages).
