OSCOUR National Newsletter, March 26, 2024.

Key Points

  • In Week 12 (March 18–24, 2024), emergency department visits rose slightly among children aged 2–14 (+6.5%, or +5,744 visits) and remained stable in other age groups, as did hospitalizations following these visits.

  • Regarding respiratory conditions, visits for influenza/flu-like illness continued to decline across all age groups (-28% across all ages, or -458 visits). Among children, there was a slight increase in visits for pneumonia among those aged 2–14 (+7%, or +65 visits), with levels remaining close to those observed since early February and still higher than in previous years.

  • Other indicators show little change compared to the previous week. Specifically among children, there is an increase in visits for trauma among those under 15 (+11%, or +2,763 visits) and among 2- to 14-year-olds: general malaise (+10%, or +60 visits), ENT conditions (+13%, or +611 visits), neurological symptoms (+11%, or +104 visits), asthma attacks (+18%, or +295 visits), and conjunctivitis (+22%, or +48 visits). To a lesser extent, these last two indicators, as well as visits for isolated fever, were also on the rise among adults aged 15–74 (respectively +6%, +8%, and +11%).

  • Finally, there was an increase in emergency department visits for measles among children, with 12 visits in S12 compared to 7 in S11 and S10. Despite low case numbers, the observed levels are higher than those of previous years (between 1 and 4 visits per week between 2019 and 2023).
