In Week 23 (June 1–7, 2020), following four consecutive weeks of increases since the lifting of lockdown measures, emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits remained stable across all age groups (up 1.4% and down 1.7%, respectively, compared to Week 22).
Over the past week, 2,688 emergency department visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 were recorded (vs. 3,964 visits in Week 22—consolidated data—representing a 33% decrease). Their share of total activity is slightly down: 1.1% in Week 23 compared to 1.6% in Week 22. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits has risen slightly to 36% (vs. 33% in S22 – consolidated data).
By region, of all visits for suspected COVID-19, 26% were recorded in Île-de-France, 9% in Pays de la Loire, 9% in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and 8% in Grand-Est.
Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 166,493 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among other conditions seen in emergency departments, the following trends were observed:

  • across all age groups, an increase in visits for asthma (more pronounced among adults: +73%, or +613 visits, vs. +30%, or +95 visits, among children; this increase was driven by a peak in asthma on June 4, linked to a phenomenon of “thunderstorm asthma” associated with the occurrence of thunderstorms on the evening of Wednesday, June 3), ENT conditions (+8.5%, or +243 visits), and gastroenteritis (+10%, or +150 visits);

  • Among children, there was an increase in gastrointestinal symptoms: gastrointestinal conditions (+9%, or +97 visits), vomiting (+20%, or +67 visits), abdominal pain (+9%, or +97 visits), as well as visits for malaise (+11%, or +45 visits) and foreign bodies (+12%, or +76 visits).

Finally, after two consecutive weeks of increases, we are seeing a stabilization in visits for trauma across all age groups and a decrease in visits for allergies among children.
