Summary
In Week 25 (June 15–21, 2020), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following visits increased among children aged 2–14 (up 11.7%, or 4,233 visits, and up 6.9%, or 238 hospitalizations following visits, respectively) and remained stable in other age groups.
Over the past week, 1,392 emergency department visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 were recorded (vs. 1,990 visits in Week 24—consolidated data—representing a 30% decrease). Their share of total activity was slightly lower: 0.6% in Week 25 compared to 0.8% in Week 24. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits has risen slightly to 39% (vs. 35% in Week 24 – consolidated data). Regionally, of all visits for suspected COVID-19, 16% were recorded in Île-de-France, 14% in French Guiana (vs. 6% in Week 24), and 12% in Grand-Est. Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 169,971 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.
Among other conditions seen in emergency departments, there has been an increase in visits:
across all age groups, for insect bites (+43%), allergies (+14%), and conjunctivitis (+14%);
among children, for trauma (+15%) and isolated fever (+9%).
Finally, visits for dehydration are on the rise, albeit in small numbers, among children and adults aged 75 and older.
