Key Points

In Week 23 (June 6–12, 2022), emergency department visits rose slightly among children under 2 years of age (+6%, or +1,249 visits) and remained stable in other age groups. Hospitalizations remained stable across all age groups.

After six consecutive weeks of decline, Week 23 saw an increase in visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups for the second consecutive week (2,600 vs. 1,909 visits, or +36% vs. +24% in Week 22). This increase applies to all age groups. The share of activity has risen slightly (0.8% vs. 0.6% in Week 22), while the proportion of hospitalizations continues to decline (32% vs. 36% in Week 22). At the regional level, emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 are on the rise in most regions. The sharpest increases are observed in Guadeloupe (+100%, or +30 visits), Île-de-France (+62%, or +273 visits), French Guiana (+57%, or +12 visits), Pays de la Loire (+52%, or +25 visits), Occitanie (+48%, or +73 visits), and PACA (+48%, or +102 visits).

Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 799,610 emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among other indicators:

  • Seasonal indicators: there has been an increase in visits for hyperthermia and heatstroke (+47%, or +43 visits) and insect bites (+30%, or +307 visits) across all age groups. Visits for chickenpox are on the rise across all age groups (+10% among children, +51% among adults), with levels higher than those observed in 2021 and 2020;

  • Moderate increases in visits for ENT infections among those aged 0–74 (+8%, or +1,115 visits) and for isolated fever (+11%, or +493 visits) among children;

  • An increase in visits with low case numbers for viral meningitis among children (+50%, or +4 visits) and adults (+62%, or +13 visits), with levels higher than in 2020 and 2021.
