Summary
In Week 27 (June 29–July 5, 2020), emergency department visits increased slightly among children under 2 years of age (+8%, or +988 visits) and remained stable in other age groups. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups.
Over the past week, the number of visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 remained stable (1,330 vs. 1,402 in Week 26). Among children, there was a second week of increase in low numbers (+26 visits, or +31%). The share of COVID-19 visits across all age groups in total activity is stable at 0.5%. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits is also stable at 35% (vs. 36% in Week 26 – consolidated data).
By region, of all visits for suspected COVID-19, 21% were recorded in Île-de-France, 16% in French Guiana, 8% in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and 8% in Brittany. Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 171,631 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.
Among other conditions seen in emergency departments, the following were observed:
among children, linked to the return to group settings (resumption of school), a sharp increase in visits for asthma (+114%, or +468 visits) and ENT conditions (+54%, or +1,097 visits) and, to a lesser extent, an increase in visits for isolated fever (+6%, or +121 visits);
among adults, a slight increase in visits for allergies (+9%, or +173 visits) and for viral meningitis in small numbers (22 visits in Week 27 vs. 13 in Week 26).
