OSCOUR National Newsletter, July 3, 2018
Summary
In Week 26 (June 25–July 1), emergency room visits decreased among children aged 2–14 (-9%, or 908 fewer visits) and remained stable in other age groups. Hospitalizations following emergency room visits followed the same trend (-10% among 2–14-year-olds).
Most seasonal illnesses are on the rise among both adults and children, linked to this weekend’s heatwave. Across all age groups, there was an increase in visits for hyperthermia and heatstroke (+97%, or +210 visits), insect bites (+19%, or +717 visits), as well as, to a lesser extent, burns (+12% among children, +6% among adults aged 15–74). There was also an increase in visits for allergies among adults (+11%, or 242 more visits) and infectious conjunctivitis among children under 2 years old (+24%, or 36 more visits). Finally, there was an increase in chickenpox, which has returned to levels seen two weeks ago.
Among the non-specific indicators, there was an increase in visits for dehydration across all age groups, but more notably among children (+75%, or 40 more visits), isolated fever in children (+3%, or +125 visits), as well as for malaise in adults aged 75 and older and children under 2 years of age (+5%, or +172 visits in the latter age group). Note that there were 5 additional cases of measles in adults.
