Key Points
In Week 27 (July 3–9, 2023), emergency department visits continued to decline among children (-6%, or 5,247 fewer visits) and remained stable among adults. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits were slightly down among 2- to 14-year-olds (-4%) and stable in other age groups.
Among those aged 75 and older, there was an increase—albeit in a small sample size—in visits for allergies (+14%, or +22 visits), asthma attacks (+9%, or +6 visits), isolated fever (+7%, or +25 visits), vomiting (+7%, or +20 visits), and general malaise (+5%, or +207 visits). Among children under 2 years of age, there was also an increase, albeit in small numbers, in visits for urinary tract infections (+14%, or +40 visits) and viral meningitis (+8 visits).
Following the rise in temperatures at the end of the week, there was an increase in visits—albeit among small numbers—for hyperthermia and heatstroke across all age groups. Visits more than tripled among those under 2 years old and those 75 years or older (+28 visits), while the increase was more moderate among those aged 2–14 and 15–74 (+7%, or +12 visits).
Regarding visits for suspected COVID-19, which remain at low levels, there has been an increase among those aged 15–74 (+26%, or +54 visits), bringing the number of visits back to the level observed 15 days ago.
