Key Points
In Week 1 (January 1–7, 2024), the second week of the year-end holidays, emergency department visits were down among those under 15 years of age (-15%) and stable among those 15 years of age and older (-1%). Hospitalizations following emergency department visits decreased across all age groups (-4%).
In line with the overall trend in activity across all causes, all indicators are down across all age groups compared to the previous week. However, an increase in visits due to suicide attempts is noted among those under 15 (+39%) and among those 15 and older (+18%).
Among those aged 15 and older, cases of gastroenteritis, vomiting, and trauma remain at levels higher than in previous years. There is also an increase in visits for chest pain among those aged 15–74 (+1,013 visits, or +11%).
Among those under 15, pneumonia cases are down (-20%), but remain at levels significantly higher than in previous years. Traumatic injuries are on the rise in this age group (+7%).
