Summary
In Week 4 (January 22–28), all-cause emergency department visits and post-hospitalization visits continued to rise among children (up 7%, 6,389 visits, and up 6%, 496 hospitalizations, respectively) and remained stable among adults.
Among children, the rise in seasonal illnesses primarily involved ENT infections (+15%, +1,338 visits) and respiratory illnesses other than influenza: bronchiolitis (+9%, +159 visits), acute bronchitis (+12%, +54 visits), and pneumonia (+8%, +42 visits). Visits for influenza-like illness across all age groups are down (-8%, -407 visits). Among children, this decline follows an increase observed the previous week, while among adults, a continuous decline in visits has been observed since the beginning of the year. Visits for gastroenteritis are also down among children (-109 visits) and stable among adults. Among adults, there is primarily an increase in ENT infections (+8%, +252 visits).
Among nonspecific indicators, asthma (+319 visits), isolated fever (+131 visits), and conjunctivitis (+69 visits) are on the rise among children. Among adults, the increase in visits relates to malaise (+286 visits) and allergies (+83 visits).
Among children and adults, the most common conditions in emergency departments include an increase in visits for trauma (1,077 and 929 visits, respectively) and abdominal pain (182 and 269 visits, respectively). Among those aged 15–74, there has also been an increase in visits for neurological conditions (+211 visits) and anxiety disorders (+236 visits).
Since Week 51 (December 18–23), there has been an increase in visits for measles among those over 15 years of age. This increase is primarily observed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In Week 4, the number of visits in this region accounted for 35 of the 42 visits observed nationwide.
