OSCOUR National Newsletter, January 21, 2020
Summary
In Week 03 (January 13–19, 2020), total emergency department activity and hospitalizations following visits increased among children under 15 years of age (+15%, or +11,912 visits, and +7%, or +571 hospitalizations). This increase was more pronounced among children aged 2–14.
Over the past week, the main trend was an increase in visits by children for respiratory conditions: influenza/flu-like illness (+81%, or +852 visits), asthma attacks (+59%, or +703 visits), and among 2- to 14-year-olds, bronchitis (+27%, or +64 visits), pneumonia (+22%, or +73 visits), and ENT conditions (+33%, or +1,389 visits). It should be noted that 5 regions are in the epidemic phase for influenza (Ile-de-France, PACA, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Pays-de-la-Loire, Occitanie), while the other 8 metropolitan regions are in the pre-epidemic phase. There has also been an increase in visits among children for isolated fever (+20.5%, or +563 visits) and conjunctivitis among 2- to 14-year-olds (+36%, or +64 visits).
The number of visits for gastroenteritis among adults continues to decline, following the sharp increase observed during the end-of-year holidays. However, the numbers remain higher than the levels of the previous two years during this period.
