Key Points

  • In Week 8 (February 20–26, 2023), the third week of school break, emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits were down among children (-9% and -7%, or 7,586 fewer visits and 599 fewer hospitalizations), and stable among adults.

  • Nearly all monitored indicators were down or stable across all age groups.

  • A few slight increases were observed (small sample sizes) and primarily affected the oldest age group. Notable trends include visits for conjunctivitis—which remain higher than in previous years—rising among those aged 75 and older (+7%) as well as among 2- to 14-year-olds (+9%), asthma among those aged 75 and older (+14%), and visits for suicidal behavior among those aged 65 and older (+11%) and those aged 15–44 (+10%, or +84 visits).

  • Among children under 2 years of age, visits for suspected COVID-19 were slightly up (+12%, or 8 more visits).
