Summary
In Week 31 (July 27–August 2, 2020), emergency department visits and subsequent hospitalizations remained stable across all age groups.
Over the past week, the number of visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 decreased by 5% compared to the previous week (1,832 vs. 1,932 visits in Week 30—consolidated data as of August 4, 2020). This decline is more pronounced among children aged 2–14 (-18%) and adults aged 75 and older (-8%). The share of visits for COVID-19 in total activity across all age groups, as well as the proportion of hospitalizations following visits, remain stable at 0.64% and 33%, respectively (vs. 0.67% and 32% in Week 30—consolidated data as of August 4, 2020).
Regionally, of all visits for suspected COVID-19, 31% were recorded in Île-de-France, 11% in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and 10% in Pays de la Loire. Since the start of surveillance on February 24, 2020, 178,889 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.
Among other conditions seen in emergency departments, linked to rising temperatures, there has been an increase in visits across all age groups for dehydration (+29%, or +118 visits), isolated fever (+6%, or +226 visits), hyperthermia, and heatstroke (+87%, or +158 visits). There were also increases in cases of general malaise across all age groups (+4%, or +411 visits), insect bites among those aged 15 and older (+28%, or +488 visits), and allergies among those aged 15–74 (+15%, or +311 visits).
