Summary

In Week 14 (April 1–7, 2019), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following visits remained stable across all age groups, except among children aged 2–14, where they declined (-5.6%, or -4,289 visits) following the increase (5%) observed in Week 13.

Over the past week, there was an increase in visits for gastroenteritis (+8%, or +199 visits) and dehydration (+6%) among children of all ages, as well as for allergies, conjunctivitis, and chickenpox among children under 2 years old (up 15%, 18%, and 9%, respectively), and for viral meningitis among children aged 2–14 (11 visits in S14 compared to 2 in S13). The majority of the observed increases involve small numbers of cases (see graphs by condition). Among adults, there was a slight increase in visits for asthma (+11%, or +134 visits).

Finally, among the most common conditions, there was an increase in visits for anxiety disorders among adults aged 15–74 (+11%, or 279 more visits) and cardiorespiratory conditions such as cardiac decompensation (+8%), chest pain (+11%), dyspnea and respiratory failure (+17%), and pneumonia (+6%) among people aged 75 and older.
