OSCOUR National Newsletter, April 3, 2018
Summary
In Week 13 (March 26–April 1, 2018), overall activity and hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups.
Among seasonal conditions, there was an increase in visits for ENT conditions among children and adults (+10%, or +790 visits, +9% or +256 visits, respectively), with the exception of adults over 75 years of age; and, to a lesser extent, for acute bronchitis (+8% or 29 visits, +5% or +57 visits, respectively). Visits for influenza/flu-like illness continue to decline, but without a corresponding decrease in the proportion of hospitalizations following these visits.
Apart from seasonal conditions, the increases observed are moderate (maximum variation of +135 weekly visits). Among the non-specific indicators, the following stand out: an increase in visits for allergies and infectious conjunctivitis in children (+6% in the 2–14 age group and +16%, respectively) and adults (+10% and +7%, respectively), for asthma in children aged 2–14 (+10%), and for isolated fever in adults (+9%). The most common conditions remain largely stable. However, among adults, there was an increase in urinary tract infections (+7%) and abdominal pain (+6%), though the latter was observed only in those aged 75 and older.
