Key Points
In Week 16 (April 17–23, 2023), the second week of school vacation, emergency department visits and subsequent hospitalizations were down among children aged 2–14 (-9%, or 5,653 fewer visits and 447 fewer hospitalizations) and remained stable in other age groups.
Respiratory conditions were down across all age groups and at levels comparable to those of previous years; in particular, visits for suspected COVID-19, which had risen slightly in Week 15 among children under 2 and adults aged 15 and older, declined in Week 16 (by 7% and 5%, respectively).
Most other indicators were either declining or stable. A few (mild to moderate) increases were observed, notably among children under 2 years of age for skin conditions (+23%, or +55 visits), cough (+9%, or +24 visits), and among people aged 75 and older for cardiac decompensation (+6.4%, or +100 visits) and malaise (+6.5%, or +241 visits). In small sample sizes, visits for chickenpox continued to rise among children under 2 years of age and adults aged 15 and older (up 6% or 8 visits and up 32% or 13 visits, respectively).
