Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, September 20, 2016.

Summary

At the national and regional levels, in weeks 35 and 36, mortality trends returned to levels comparable to those expected for this period, across all ages and age groups (Figures 1–3).In week 34 (August 22–28, 2016), during which a heat wave was observed, the national mortality trend was on the rise but not significantly higher than expected, both for all ages and for people aged 75 and older (Figures 1–3). However, this observation varies by region. An upward trend in mortality is observed in several regions, and it is significantly higher than expected (with values exceeding the thresholds) in Centre-Val de Loire and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. These two regions were placed under an orange alert in week 34. Given the usual delays in data transmission, the observed mortality figures are still incomplete, both at the national and regional levels, and it is not yet possible to precisely quantify the increase in mortality at this stage. Caution is therefore advised when interpreting these observations.

In week 37 (August 29 to September 4), 1,139 deaths were recorded via electronic certification; however, it is not possible to interpret the trend compared to previous weeks due to the low coverage rate for this source.
