Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, March 7, 2017.

Summary

Nationally, the decline in all-cause mortality continued in week 8. The observed figures remain within the usual range of fluctuation around the expected number of deaths for the second consecutive week, across all age groups and among people aged 65–84.Mortality among people aged 85 and older also returned to the usual range of fluctuation in week 8 (the first week) (Figures 1–3).

Over the ten weeks of the influenza epidemic (weeks 49 to 06), the number of excess deaths from all causes is estimated at 21,200 (data extrapolated for all of France) as of March 7, 2017.

At the regional level (Figure 4), the decline in mortality also continued in all regions during week 8. Mortality observed during this week appears to have returned to within the usual range of fluctuation in all regions, whereas the number of deaths was still higher than expected in four regions during week 7 (Brittany, Normandy, Grand Est, and Burgundy-Franche-Comté).

Since mortality data have not yet been consolidated due to the usual reporting delays, these observations represent initial estimates at both the national and regional levels, which will evolve as consolidation proceeds.

At the European level, among the countries participating in the EuroMomo network (www.euromomo.eu), the decline in mortality is also continuing, and a return to the usual range of fluctuation appears to be emerging for all countries, although the data still needs to be consolidated in the coming weeks (Figure 5).

According to data from electronic certification, 1,286 deaths were recorded during week 9 of 2017 (February 27 to March 5, 2017) (Figure 6).
