Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, July 24, 2017.

Summary

In week 27 (July 3–9), the number of deaths observed across all age groups remains within the usual range of fluctuation at this stage, both nationally and regionally. However, there is a significant increase in the number of deaths among people aged 15–64 in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and among those aged 65 and older in the Grand-Est region. In week 28 (July 10–16), mortality at this stage remains below expected levels across all age groups. Given the usual delays in data transmission, the mortality figures observed over these two weeks are still incomplete. Caution is therefore advised when interpreting these observations at both the national and regional levels.Furthermore, an initial assessment of mortality for week 25 (June 19–25)—the week corresponding to the peak of the heatwave that affected a large part of the country—shows a 6% increase in mortality across all age groups (representing an estimated excess of 580 deaths). This increase is observed among people over 65 (though it does not exceed the usual margins of fluctuation) and is significant among those aged 15–64 (+13%, representing an estimated excess of 215 deaths). A detailed report on this episode is available on the website. Based on data from electronic death certificates, 1,228 deaths were recorded during week 29 of 2017 (July 17–23, 2017).
