Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, July 11, 2017.

Summary

Based on mortality data provided by INSEE, the observed number of deaths from all causes during week 25 (June 19–25, 2017) remains within the usual range of variation for this period, across all age groups and among adults aged 65 and older. However, among adults aged 15–64, analysis of the consolidated data for this week reveals a significant increase in the number of deaths at the national level (Figure 3), driven primarily by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the only region to date to significantly exceed the threshold. Week 25 corresponds to the period of the June heat wave (June 17–24). In week 26 (June 26–July 2), the number of deaths appears to have returned to normal fluctuations across all age groups. Given the usual delays in data transmission, the observed mortality figures are still incomplete. Caution is therefore advised when interpreting these findings at both the national and regional levels.

According to data from electronic certification, 1,333 deaths were recorded during week 27 of 2017 (July 3–9, 2017).
