Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, January 9, 2018.
Summary
Nationally, all-cause mortality reported by INSEE rose in early December, reaching the upper limit of usual fluctuations in week 50 (December 11–17). However, mortality trends varied by age group during December, with:
a first significant increase among adults aged 15–64 during the first two weeks of December (December 4–17), followed by a return to the upper limit of the usual fluctuation range in week 51,
a significant increase (at the upper limit of the usual fluctuation range) among adults aged 65–84 in week 51.
Mortality among children and adults over 85, however, remains in line with expected values.
At the regional level, aside from isolated variations, the following are specifically noted (data not shown):
in the Occitanie region: an increase in mortality among those aged 15–64 during the first three weeks of December and among those aged 65 and older starting in mid-December,
in the Île-de-France region: an increase in mortality across all age groups starting in week 50.
These initial observations should be interpreted with caution, as the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in reporting. As a reminder, these analyses are based on vital statistics data and do not contain any information on the medical causes of death.
