Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, January 10, 2017.
Summary
Nationwide, all-cause mortality during the last two weeks of 2016 (December 19, 2016, to January 1, 2017) rose sharply across all age groups, and more specifically among people aged 65 and older.Regionally, this increase is observed in the four regions along the eastern coast (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, PACA, Grand-Est, and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), as well as in Île-de-France and, to a lesser extent, in Normandy. The Occitanie region also saw an increase during the last week of 2016. Nationally, during week 51 (December 19–25, 2016), the observed number of deaths exceeded the expected number by at least 1,000 deaths (i.e., at least +10%) across all age groups. These observations constitute preliminary estimates that should be interpreted with caution at this stage, as mortality data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in data transmission.Based on data from electronic certification, during the first week of 2017 (January 2–8, 2017), 1,764 deaths were recorded, an increase compared to previous weeks; however, it is not possible to interpret this trend given the low coverage rate for this source.
