Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update for February 6, 2018.

Summary

Nationally, the number of deaths declined during weeks 3 and 4 (January 15–28), but remained significant across all age groups (particularly among people aged 65 and older) during week 3 (January 15–21).Over the period from December 4, 2017, to January 14, 2018, excess mortality across all age groups is estimated at 9%, or approximately 6,400 additional deaths (estimate extrapolated to the whole of France). When analyzed by age group, the excess is estimated at 12% among those aged 15–64 and 8% among those aged 65 and older. At the regional level, a decrease in mortality across all age groups was also observed during January in the three most affected regions (PACA, Occitanie, and Île-de-France). However, the number of deaths remained above the threshold in week 3 among those aged 15–64 in Occitanie and among those aged 65 and older in PACA.Excess mortality across all age groups for these three regions is estimated (for the period from December 4, 2017, to January 14, 2018) at +14% in Île-de-France and PACA, and at +17% in Occitanie. These initial observations should be interpreted with caution, as the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in transmission. As a reminder, these analyses are based on civil registry data and do not contain any information on the medical causes of death. According to data from electronic certification, during the fifth week of 2018 (January 29 to February 4), 1,746 deaths were recorded (Figure 4).
