Health Surveillance of Mortality. Weekly Update, February 26, 2019.
Summary
Nationwide, all-cause mortality across all age groups rose sharply during the first two weeks of 2019 and appeared to stabilize in mid-January, before rising again through week 6. The number of deaths across all age groups was significantly higher than the expected threshold during the first 7 weeks of the year. Older adults remain the most affected by this increase, particularly those aged 85 and older. Across all age groups, excess mortality is estimated at +11%, or +8,300 deaths over the first six weeks of 2019 (estimate extrapolated to the whole of France).
These observations should be interpreted with caution, as the data are not yet consolidated due to the usual delays in transmission.
According to data from electronic death certificates, 2,383 deaths were recorded in week 08 (February 18–24, 2019).
